Gosia Bezubik: “I don’t trust people who don’t like desserts”

However odd it sounds but a lot of exciting things in life happened to me…in the kitchen.

My most pleasant and vivid memories revolve around the table. The wonderful people I have met are somewhat connected with food. Food is meant for sharing and if so then people have so much in common. Eating is our common denominator and a moment experienced universally.

My grandmother used to say: “I don’t trust people who don’t like desserts” while treating me to another piece of her most coveted apple pie. When I was a little girl she never made me eat, which is probably everyone’s childhood trauma. Maybe that is why I always came for more. Although food was an integral part of every meeting, it was never about satiating my appetite only. The whole ritual included assisting her in her miniature kitchen, preparing a cup of hot cocoa in my own cup, settling in the living room and indulging ourselves with cake and a meaningful conversation. She would talk about getting up at dawn in her childhood, wading through snow to get to school, dreaming of silk stockings and making homemade butter with her mother. My grandma was not only a repository of knowledge and wisdom for me but, first and foremost, a brilliant cook. Her recipes were always most wanted hand-me-downs among the female members of our family. Thanks to the fact that I am the youngest in the family, and so was my granny, she let me in her culinary world and revealed the secrets of Eastern cuisine. Here they are, centrally positioned, under a glass top of my table.

It has never crossed my mind that one day my kitchen will become the heart of my home. I am not a “meat-and-potato” girl and when I enter my little realm I rather experiment with food, adding a touch of sophistication to every dish. Our house rarely smells of meat. On the contrary, it is filled with a prevailing smell of chocolate. I have a sweet tooth and at some point in my life, namely five years ago on maternity leave, I became an amateur sugar craft artist. (Muffin Love) My culinary adventure resulted in meeting fantastic people, taking part in exciting events, sharing food and magic moments at various tables, which has brought me immeasurable pleasure. Contrary to common belief, I do not surf the internet for yet another pair of shoes. I search for food photographs and looking at them makes my mouth water.

So here is food for thought for you: is food fuel or pleasure?
